CREWE PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY
PROGRAMME FOR THE 2006-7 SEASON
Crewe Photographic Society is 60 years old next year, the oldest camera club in the area but still very much alive and kicking!
We had a really good season last year with 3rd place in the NCPS Inter-Club Competition (both Prints and slides) and a win in our great local Monochrome competition – “The Five Towns”. Competitions are not everything; we are here to help, inspire and entertain photographers of all kinds and our membership growth is testimony to our success in doing that. You can attend three meetings before joining us; you just pay the attendance levy of £1 per meeting, so come along!
All meetings are Thursdays, 7.45pm for 8.00pm, at Crewe Library (directions), except where stated.
(You'll find a single page version of the programme and a copy you can import into either Outlook or Works calendars on the Downloads page)
Ron Smith has provided 2 themes for each month for our open, just for fun, topics (although there's no reason why these couldn't also become competition entries f you want!)

September 2006
14th September OPEN EVENING
The season kicks off with a look at some of our successes last year. Members will reveal a few secrets about how their winning shots were made. Please bring along new work too. New tutorials will be available and we have several portfolios to view.
21st September L & CPU Slide Y2 Folio
We are one of the 105 clubs affiliated to the L&CPU. This show will feature some of the best slides from the North West this year.
28th September RECORDED LECTURE-CLOSE-UP PHOTOGRAPHY – David Marsh FRPS APAGB
David will be with us, in spirit at least, as we enjoy his guide to close-up photography. It was a special request by members that we did something on this subject. Perhaps our natural history and table-top exponents will contribute.
October 2006
Monthly Themes: "Bottles" or "Old fashioned"
5th October - MADIERA - Tony Pioli ARPS ABPE
It will be great to have Tony back with us again, he beguiled us with his wonderful natural history shots a couple of years back and his presentation on Madeira is a mix of natural history and travelogue. A beautiful island, Tony is bound to do it justice and have you visiting the travel agents the next day!
Incidentally, notice that Tony’s BPE 5* has now become an ABPE, testimony to the enormous number of acceptances he has had in national competitions.
(SLIDES IN FOR FIRST SLIDE LEAGUE COMPETITION)
12th October – OPEN EVENING
Shooting techniques, Photoshop demos, members work, portfolios – anything YOU want to hear or see.
(PRINTS IN FOR FIRST PRINT LEAGUE COMPETITION)

Monday 23rd October Robertshaw Trophy at Blythe Bridge Camera club
The Robertshaw is a competition for slides between Macclesfield Camera Club, Blythe Bridge Camera Club, Leek Camera Club, Stoke Camera Club and Crewe. Blythe Bridge are the hosts this year. Leek are the present trophy holders; they had some excellent work entered last year and will take some beating! A chance to meet clubs we only see once a year as well as to enjoy some great pictures.
26th October SLIDE LEAGUE COMPETITION No1
We have two League Competitions for slides and the subject is open, so we have a wide variety of photographs. Each member can enter up to 6 slides. There is nothing in photography that delights the eye more than a good slide, well projected. We had a good entry last year and look forward to repeating that.
November 2006
Monthly Themes: "Age" or "Household Objects"
2nd November PRINT LEAGUE COMPETITION No 1
We have three League Competitions for prints and the entry seems to just grow and grow! Each member can enter up to 4 colour and 4 mono prints. This will be an exciting year. What will the established exponents produce? Will one of the considerable number who found their feet last year sweep all aside? What will we see from that dyed-in-the-wool darkroom portraitist who “went digital” last year? One thing we are practically guaranteed is a cavalcade of sparkling images.
9th November BATTLE WITH ALSAGER at ALSAGER CAMERA CLUB
10 prints and 10 slides from each club. Last year we did discuss having some digital images too. Alsager will host it and provide the judge.
16th November 2006 Photograms Physiograms & Scannergrams Ron Smith
Ron is a treasure house of knowledge and his talks are always a season highlight because he imparts that knowledge in a practical and often hilarious manner. Not to be missed! Bring your gear.
(DIGITAL FILES MUST BE IN FOR THE JIM HARRISON TROPHY COMPETITION)
23rd November 2006 The I's Of The Dragon Margaret Salisbury FRPS EFIAP APAGB
That she has gained a FRPS TWICE OVER says enough about Margaret’s qualifications. She is a much sought-after judge on the national circuit – she doesn’t just exercise good judgement though, she is full of useful tips and memorable anecdotes. No doubt we will hear a few tonight as she shows her pictures of Italy, India and the Islands. That explains the “I’s”, I cannot imagine where the Dragon comes in!
Margaret is sponsored by Fotospeed and we are grateful to them for being able to have her visit us for just the basic PAGB rates.
(SLIDES IN FOR SECOND SLIDE LEAGUE COMPETITION)

This will be our third annual DIGITAL PROJECTED IMAGE competition. Started as an experiment in 2004 it ran last year with a Trophy sponsored by the late JIM HARRISON (who sadly passed away aged 100 this November). It was a very memorable occasion last year. There were 100 entries and they were beautifully presented in a digital slide show, set to music, and then judged and commented on by Dave Hollows CPAGB. The judge this year will be Bob Dennis CPAGB APAGB BPE2
14th December 2006 SLIDE LEAGUE COMPETITION 2

1st February 2007 Ian Stewart ARPS DPAGB Digital Wedding Photography - It's Easy Isn't It?"
This is a special talk by Ian which grew out of requests for information on flash photography. In his “retirement” Ian is doing a lot of wedding photography and this talk should not only cover work with flash but help us in photographing people – there is no intention to turn us all into wedding photographers!
(PRINTS IN FOR THE THIRD LEAGUE PRINT COMPETITION)
8th February 2007 DIGITAL KNOCK OUT COMPETITION
We tried this for the first time last year and it proved a great entertainment. This year there is a topic – Seasons – it’s a broad one so there is plenty of scope. Pictures are projected in random order in pairs and the members vote for the best of the two, which then goes forward to the next round.
15th February 2007 NCPS Annual
The North Cheshire PS Inter-Club competition is a great season highlight. We came third in slides and third in the print category last year. It runs on three nights; Wednesday is for prints, Thursday is the slide KO and Friday is a presentation by a leading club photographer. Look at www.ncps.org.uk for further details.
THERE WILL BE NO MEETING AT CREWE LIBRARY TONIGHT
22nd February 2007 PRINT COMP 3
The third and last league competition. After this members can make their selections from their entries in the Print Final.

(PRINTS IN FOR THE PRINT ANNUAL)
8th March 2007 STUDIO FLASH Ian Aldcoft ARPS
Ian is the technical administrator behind the L&CPU Website. He also uses his computer skills to collate the L&CPU results in the Annual Competitions. He was awarded the L&CPU Roll Of Honour medal this year for his services to the L&CPU.
Ian’s portrait work can be seen in the L&CPU Gallery – www.lcpu.org.uk He will be demonstrating the use of electronic flash in portraiture. He gave this demonstration recently to another club and they found it first rate. If you look at his work you will see that we can learn a lot from him.
15th March 2007 Battle SANDBACH PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY @ CREWE
We are the hosts this year for this annual inter-club competition. We lost last year so will be looking to acquit ourselves better this time. It is always interesting to see what other clubs are getting up to.
(SLIDES IN FOR THE SLIDE ANNUAL COMPETITION)
22nd March 2007 Members SLIDE KNOCKOUT COMPETITION - CHANGE FROM ORIGINAL PROGRAMME
Slides are projected in random order, in pairs. Members vote for the better of the two and that one goes forward into the next round. 6 entries per member. A great chance to try out reactions to your new work and to see a lot of new slides.
29th March OPEN EVENING
Shooting techniques, Photoshop demos, members work, portfolios – anything YOU want to hear or see.
April 2007
Monthly Themes: "Close Up" or "Bizzare"
05/04/2007 ANNUAL SLIDE COMPETITION
Many clubs are suffering reduced entries in their slide competitions and we reduced the number of slide competitions last year in anticipation of the same thing happening to us. In fact we had a good show of entries and a great series of slide competitions.
12th April 2007 Battle NANTWICH CAMERA CLUB @ CREWE
We host this inter-club competition this year. Slides and prints. Always a great show of quality work and a close competition.
19th April 2007 ANNUAL PRINT COMPETITION - CHANGE FROM ORIGINAL PROGRAMME
As with most clubs we are finding that prints are becoming a very popular medium. This is great for the viewer but it creates a hard task for the judge if he/she has over 100 prints to get through. For this year, then, we have reduced the entry to 4 colour and 4 mono prints per member. We will still see the best prints of the year!
26th April 2007 ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING & AWARDS EVENING
May 2007
3rd May 2007 Colin Douglas ARPS CPAGB BPE2* Castile & Extremadura
Colin is one of the regions most talented photographers. His mono print Another Wet Day was the PAGB best mono print of the year in 2006. Following your Madeiran holiday inspired by Tony Pioli’s pictures you will be booking again, for Spain, after Colin’s!
10th May 2007 OPEN EVENING
We are planning something special for this, the final club-only meeting in our 60th year.
17th May 2007 THE “5-TOWNS” MONOCHROME PRINT COMPETITION
How fitting that the most prestigious local inter-club competition should be hosted by CREWE PS in our 60th year. The “5-TOWNS” are ALSAGER Camera Club, CREWE, NANTWICH Camera Club, SANDBACH Photographic Society and WHITCHURCH Photographic Society.
We are the trophy holders, but it was a close thing and this year’s competition will be as exciting as ever.
