CREWE PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY

PROGRAMME FOR THE 2009-10 Season

I do hope that you have had plenty of opportunities to get some new shots over the break. Thanks for all your messages, it was great to see the new work you sent and I think some of it may cause quite a stir during the coming season! To those who expressed withdrawal symptoms due to not being able to get your weekly “shot” of CPS I can only say – you have not long to wait!

Our membership increased by over 33% last year and part of the reason is the warm welcome and help you get as a potential new member at Crewe. So if you are reading this looking for a club to join don’t hesitate, come along.

John Royle, Chairman

All dates are Thursdays at Crewe Library 7.30pm for 8.00pm, unless otherwise stated.

Click on the date or title of each week's activity below to read more (or scroll down to read the whole of the season's programme) and very soon after each week's meeting our Chairman and Programme Secretary, John Royle CPGAB, writes a report which you'll then also be able to read by clicking on the appropriate report link (You'll find printable and downloadable versions of the programme on the Downloads page).

10th September 2009 - Open Evening

We kick off the New Season with a taster of what treats are in store. There will be a reminder of the changes we have made to the competition rules and a demonstration of mounting prints and using our Spyder 3 calibration equipment. There will be a Bring and Buy sale. You will have time to sign up for the new season; this year we have photo membership cards so bring a passport photo to have sealed onto your card.

New members will see samples of our work from the 2008-9 Season. If you are new to the club you are not expected to join until you have been to three meetings (though we ask you to pay the attendance fee).

17th September 2009 - Ron Smith - Young Eyes and the Lower Viewpoint

Ron can always be relied upon to put on a sparkling show and here we will have it combined with some pretty serious pictorialism. You will have the chance of a fresh look at picture making from a new perspective.

24th September 2009 - L&CPU Slide Folio

We are no doubt nearing the end of slides as a competition medium but there was some stunning stuff submitted this year and last and this folio of 100 slides looks at some of the best. We may well get chance to look again at issues which arise from the first Open Evening of the year too.

1st October 2009 - Tony Redford - Beijing and Hong Kong

Tony and Dorothy Redford are at the hub of the creative photography going on at North Cheshire Photographic Society. It may be Tony by himself tonight but his AVs are a real treat and will provide lots of ideas for your own presentations as well as providing an excellent evenings entertainment.

Monday 5th October At Macclesfield Library The ROBERTSHAW TROPHY

Hosted by Macclesfield CC this 5-way battle for PDIs is hotly contested each year. We were one club down last year because Stoke said they were not ready to contest with digital images. Holmes Chapel have agreed to join us. They have some talented members so it will be interesting to see how it all goes.

8th October 2009 - L&CPU Folio - Documentary P

A selection of work from the 60 Clubs who entered the 2009 L&CPU Annuals. The folios often have a commentary and last about an hour which will allow us time to devote some attention to your current problems too with a sort of mini Open Evening.

15th October 2009 - First PDI Competition

This year the demand was for three PDI League Comps and a Final (The Jim Harrison Trophy). So now the pattern exactly echoes prints. Remember too that we now have a Nature section. The judge will mark nature and general images separately but totals go together for the League. Best images compete later in the Annual for the Jim Harrison Trophy.

22nd October 2009 - Open Evening

With one competition already completed and the season well underway we should be in a good position to draw together some pointers on image preparation etc to help you. Don’t forget though that these evening are to help you. Last year we had many good suggestions - such as a group “Masterclass” where people bring in work and we talk about it.

29th October 2009 - PRINT LEAGUE ONE

As usual we will have COLOUR and MONOCHROME categories but this year the COLOUR itself is divided in Nature and General. We will only count your best TWO images in COLOUR and two in MONO towards your running total (for each section).

Judging NATURE images separately will increase the number of high-scoring images so we should see some new subject areas coming to the fore.

5th November 2009 - John Wells -The Coming Of Age Roadshow

John Wells FRPS will make you sit up because firstly he has some really imaginative and original work to show - also he is one of the funniest guys you could wish to meet - so we are sure of a very good evening. John is sponsored by Permajet so he will be able to answer any technical queries you may have about their papers and will have samples for sale at special discounts.

12th November 2009 - Inter-Club Competition with Alsager CC

Our first battle of the season is with Alsager, as usual. We are hosting the event tonight and we look forward to seeing their latest creations and see if the judge thinks they match ours!!

19th November 2009 - PDI League Two

Feels like they are coming thick and fast - PDI 2 already - well you did say you wanted an extra one this year!

26th November 2009 - EPSON EVENING – EPSON ROADSHOW

We have been lucky to get a team from Epson to put on a full-blown demonstration of printers and printing. Our colleagues from other clubs are welcome but please contact us first because we now have only 30 spare places.

We had booked the L&CPU Colour Print Folio for this evening but we will probably look at a digital version next week instead.

3rd December 2009 - Open Evening

A chance to help you with issues that have arisen so far. We will also have a chance to look at the L&CPU Colour Print folio is digital form.

10th December 2009 -  Print League 2

Up to 3 Colour (Nature & General) and 3 Mono prints may be submitted. Best two in each category count. Members have been sending me their work by email and posting it on the L&CPU Forum Gallery so I know we are in for a real pictorial treat this year!

17th December 2009 - L&CPU Folio and Christmas Fayre

A social event above everything - get to know your new friends better!

CHRISTMAS BREAK - We start meetings again on 14th January but have our three-way battle with Mid-Cheshire and Whitchurch on 5th January and a (Committee meeting on 7th January) no club meeting.

14th January 2010 - Ian Whiston - East African Wildlife Digital Odyssey

Our own Ian Whiston will show us a startling array of wildlife pictures. He will have just returned from his seventh Safari and, apart from great photos we will no doubt pick up lots of tips about visiting, and surviving the Mara.

21st January 2010 – PDI League Competition 3

We had about 30 people entering the PDI competitions last year and I know that many newcomers said that they were ready to have a go this year – so we should be getting a cavalcade of images this year.

28th January 2010 – L&CPU FOLIO MONO P

Some of the best monochrome prints entered in the 2009 L&CPU Annual.

4th February 2010 – The Bebington Salon Of Photography

One of the organizers of this event – Bob Dennis APAGB CPAGB BPE2* will be showing the best images from this National BPE Competition. It is always a great show, with AV sequences of the images as well as all the acceptance and awards, though may be the last time it is on the road. Several members usually enter the competition and we are joined by our other local clubs for this showing.

10th, 11th, 12th February at Poynton – The North Cheshire PS Inter-Club Competition week.

There is no meeting at Crewe Library this week to give you a chance to visit North Cheshire. We will be entering the Print Competition (Wednesday night), and the PDI (Thursday).

18th February 2010 - Print League 3

COLOUR and MONO sections with COLOUR divided into GENERAL and NATURE. Best two marks in each of COLOUR and MONO go forward and after tonight we can be told who has won the COLOUR PRINT LEAGUE and who has won the MONO PRINT LEAGUE. We then have to sort THREE winners in the ANNUAL on 23rd March; GENERAL COLOUR, NATURE COLOUR and MONO.

Wednesday 24th February 2010 – Battle with Sandbach PS at Sandbach

Sandbach Library will be the venue for our annual inter-club competition with Sandbach. They won by a very small margin last year. Prints and PDIs.

25th February 2010 – L&CPU Slide Folio

We don’t know how long the “cardboard framed little darlings” will survive in the digital age. The 2010 L&CPU Annual will feature a “projected image” section which will permit both slides and PDIs. Certainly what we have here are a collection of remarkable images from the 2009 Annual.

4th March 2010 – Portrait Evening

This was hugely popular last year and just had to be repeated. Ian, Sharon & Dave. One new member last year was heard to say “Wow, I’ve just learned more of that bloke (Ian) in five minutes than I’ve learned all year!”.

11th March 2010 – The Jim Harrison Trophy

Originally one competition this is now the PDI Annual and so represents the culmination of the whole year’s League Competitions. We are delighted that this trophy, in memory of Jim, our one time centenarian member, now has this added status.

18th March 2010 – Open Evening

We have a large collection of folios to view, tips to pass on, prints to discuss – we can fill an evening several times over – but let us have your views as to what you would like.

25th March 2010 – Annual Print Competition

You have had 3 League Print Competitions now we will see which the best of the best. 3 Colour, 3 Mono per entrant – you must use prints already submitted to League Competitions. You can re-print with minor alterations if you wish.

1st April 2010 – The Maurice Ashwin Trophy

For portraits only, this print competition was one of the events of the year last season.

6th April 2010 – Battle with Mid-Cheshire & Whitchurch at Whitchurch

Three-way inter-club competition with Mid-Cheshire and Whitchurch. It takes place on Tuesday 6th January 2010 at Whitchurch PS, St John’s Methodist Church Meeting Room in St John’s St., Whitchurch, SY13 1QT. 7.30pm.

It is easy to find. Just take the A525 from Nantwich to Whitchurch and take the RIGHT (2nd exit) at the first roundabout on the outskirts of Whitchurch. This is the B5398 (Waymills, then Station Road) Keep on this road towards the centre of town until you meet the T junction with the B5395 at the traffic lights (about one mile). Turn RIGHT and then watch out for some shops set back from the road with a car park in front. You may need to here because St John’s Street is on the left immediately after the shops and there is very limited parking. There are over 200 spaces in the car park at the shops.  Whitchurch won last year by the narrowest of margins - what will happen this time?

8th April 2010 – Terry Hewitt "Colour Management".

Terry Hewitt will be coming over to us from Stockport to talk about Colour Management. Terry is new as a club photography lecturer but certainly not new to lecturing – he teaches IT and has lectured all over the World – so he should be able to make us understand! He is a very welcome addition to the L&CPU lecturing list because he is offering three practically orientated lectures – people are always saying that we need more practical stuff – so here it is.

Tuesday 13th April 2010 – Battle with Nantwich CC

Our annual inter-club competition with Nantwich CC. It will be at their clubroom in Nantwich. Nantwich has a talented membership and so it is always a close thing. We won last year but laurels cannot be rested on!

15th April 2010 – Graham Dean – Deano’s Digital Dabblings

We have always enjoyed Graham’s pictures in folios and on the L&CU Website Gallery, now you can hear from the man himself!

22nd April 2010 – AGM and Prize Evening

AGMs are usually fairly staid events which attract little interest – no so CPS’s. We find that many members take an active interest in what we do and want to know about the running of the club and have their say. Besides, they all want to know who, this season, has won the unusual and coveted “Chairman’s Choice” alongside all the other awards.

29th April 2010 – Projected Image Knock Out.

I think it says in the new rules that the procedure for running a slide and PDI Knock-Out will be decided on the night. Well I don’t expect to leave it that late but we do at least have a bit of a breather before it comes around. In essence it is a chance to show any slides you have taken recently. We had about seven members enter slides in our last competition but none of them were slide-workers exclusively.

6th May 2010 – A Celebration of the Season

A chance to look again at the year’s work and perhaps hear a bit about how the work was created etc. This makes a very entertaining evening, with an AV of our L&CPU 2010 entry and a look back at our successes of the year (hopefully)

Tuesday 11th May 2010 – The 5-Towns Monochrome Print Competition

This prestigious event is hosted this year by Whitchurch. It is more accurately called the Alan Challinor Trophy but “Five Towns” come from the five competing clubs; Alsager, Crewe, Nantwich, Sandbach and Whitchurch. The host club works hard to make this a special event and will try to find a national standard judge. Sad to say Peter Rees has already said that he is not available but that gives you an idea of the quality of judge we look for.

Well, that’s it. We are intending to put on an exhibition or another Photoday at the end of the season/beginning of next season. After all many clubs make an exhibition of themselves so why not us! Seriously, these events are a great showcase and give us a wider publicity. It not only attracts potential members but draws attention to what goes on in the community.
