Not so long ago there was a brief discussion on the forum about Bruce Gilden, who had recently appeared on Sky’s ‘Masters of Photography’ show. Some years earlier (in 2011) Gilden was at the Format Festival in Derby, and was commissioned to photograph in the town, in the course of which the BJP made this film of Gilden at work. What do you reckon?
Would have liked to see the images he took. I am surprised he wasn’t taken to task by some of the people he took pics of. Was I correct in thinking he was using a flash right in peoples face, you can’t do that!
My opinion of him as a person has not changed, it merely confirms how odious a person he is.
I don’t have a link to Gilden’s ‘Derby’ photographs, but I guess they’d be similar in style to his New York City photographs. You might also go to the ‘Projects’ link at the top of that page, and look at the work from ‘Ireland’ and ‘Coney Island’. (If you can bear to, have a look at the colour ‘portrait’ under ‘Faces’)
He generally works with a wide-angle lens from very close (which is very distorting for faces), and often with hand-held flash as you saw in the Derby video, which adds to the unnaturally and garishly bright/flat look of the resulting pictures.
My goodness such awful images. Ian you take much better street captures with a far better balanced DOF and detail, as you say his pics are flat and overexposed. This is a man that has been labeled an expert in street photography. He certainly has a style of his own maybe that what sets him apart in the photography world
