THIS IS NOT MY PHOTO–COPYRIGHT OFF THE WEB. This crater is in Macclesfield forest caused by a V 1 Flying bomb on Christmas Eve 1944.I remember the attack so well. The north had not had raids for two years and out of range of the V1 Doodlebug flying bombs–so we thought. An air raid alert about five in the morning in the midst of Christmas. The Luftwaffe attached them to Heinkels and released them near the North Sea coast. The nearest to us was this one- another in Stockport-and Didsbury. About fifty were released. The wonders of the Web———coming across all of the details of a distant memory and getting so much background info.

That’s a fascinating story and so close to home. If you passed the scene you would think that dip in the land was caused by a bomb.
