John kindly gave us a link in one of his informative emails to the PAGB newsletter. Here the link to it:
On page 6 there is an article from Ian Findlay of Dumfries Camera Club who don’t have a competitive league system, but just do what we do with out annual competitions. That is, they ask the judge to be more positive and encouraging with his comments rather than find minor things to criticise so they can mark down a photograph. The judge picks a first, second and third, then gives others ‘Highly Commended’ and ‘Commended’. The remainder are unmarked. ‘Please read it and see what you thing.
I know John has discussed this before and it would be interesting to see what members think of changing our league system to something like this idea.March 8, 2016 at 9:10 pm #11477
I noticed the article. Please remember that we used to have marks from 8-20, we are now 14-20. That equates to having 1, 2, 3, VHC, HC, C, which translates to 20,19,18,17,16,15 and the rest get 14. Only trouble is that many judges would then tend to give fewer awards, but the point is that our mark system has virtually morphed into the awards system anyway.
I am saying that we practically have the awards system, but if we used awards it may make a bigger section of 15s or 14s (depending on the number of awards) unless we specify the percentage of entries which are to get awards.
I have come across a lot (I won’t say every conceivable type) of different marking and ranking methods used by clubs. The fact that there are a lot probably means that nobody has it absolutely right! Whatever the system is, no matter how odd, the club members are used to it.
A more radical thought is – should we scrap the League? I think it gets the entries in.March 11, 2016 at 6:33 pm #11510
At the risk of being controversial what’s the issue with the current system? I think we get a good entry for most competitions, so I don’t know what we would hope to achieve by changing. I’m not against change, I would just like to know how it would benefit the club and members.March 14, 2016 at 4:04 pm #11512
I agree with Martin. If it isn’t broke why try and fix it.March 14, 2016 at 5:00 pm #11513
I don’t think our current competition system is broke and and after 3 competitions the scores even themselves out. I think everyone would agree that the best photographer over the season deservedly wins the league competitions. The main advantage in changing the system would probably make life easier for a judge who would only have to give ‘marks’ to his top photographs and the rest would get a fixed score of something like 15. We might get more encouraging comments and less nick picking.
I find it interesting to see how the judge for our annual competitions marks a photograph compared with how it was marked in a league competition. I can get quite different comments and score. That’s always going to happen.
I just wondered how members thought about this. There doesn’t seem to be any opinions that we should change I’m quite happy with our current system.March 15, 2016 at 4:20 pm #11525
You got a taste in the Annual judging of what an awards based marking system would be like. Although in theory it is the same judges tend to only award a limited number of commended and highly commended. Probably 80% of the pictures get nothing. This is fine in the annual since they have all been judged before, but imagine that being your only impression of how the judge ranks your image.March 16, 2016 at 4:50 pm #11531
That’s a very good point John and one that makes me think that our present system should stay as it is.March 19, 2016 at 9:35 pm #11554
On the basis of what I have read so far I see no point in changing.March 20, 2016 at 11:06 am #11556
The writer of the article himself says that, with a league system, you need marks! QED.
