My Leica V-LUX is almost ten years old and this morning decided it was time to try the digital lens setting. Bit gloomy out and took these on 400 tele by 2 giving 800  mm digital and it is only a 10 mg  camera. I was pleasantly surprised. O a fine day I will try with x4    giving 1600mm.

At about six metres–standard 50mm   and from same tripod holes in carpet—800mm  digital, not bad considering small size of sensor.

I’ve always assumed that a digital zoom, as opposed to an optical zoom, is only the equivalent to cropping, but these look much better.

My camera does upscale when it crops and it looks like that is happening here.

Well John I will be guided by the expert. Just been out in the sunshine and done some test shots. Basic 50mm optical shot of the filling station. All from the same spot three 800mm Digital shots. Now  the latter car shot was not planned. But as approaching at a fair pace of knots–I noticed the Continuous Auto Focus was working well. So in all am quite pleased.

Very impressive Ken. I was surprised at the quality considering the focal length and digital zoom software.

And just as you thought I had finished. To add to the confusion!!!!! as John mentioned the  concept of cropping the sensor in creating digital magnification and his comments that perhaps the camera upscales  the file size. Recalling I had set the optical zoom to 400 max—then changed to “digital” telephoto giving  800 mm -as seen in previous pics. On reading the handbook(well only  had for ten years) like you do. It explains ” Extra Zoom”   EZ—–Can be obtained by reducing the sensor size–so have reduced from 10mp   to 5 mp  then repeated the same shots from the same position. So I suppose now about 1000mm . Yes as expected some noise, but I could improve by going down to 100ISO. Of course this is not club comp. stuff. But if on safari you can put more space between you and the lion with an eye on its next meal there will be 5 more seconds to get back in the Range Rover.    Have also put a moving car again showing the CAF  at this high magnification.
