I must be bonkers—have now ordered my new lens-500mm from Amazon-scheduled delivery Monday-if by courier sooner–Royal Mail–next year. Why am I bonkers–well its a Mirror Lens. They are a nightmare–6.3 fixed –the DOF is so shallow –at 3m there would not be enough DOF for a butterfly. Very hard to focus and never going to be sharp like a prime lens. The pro”s are the construction is a very short lens for the focal length–inexpensive at just under £200. I had a cheap Chinese made one years ago and it was rubbish. This is the Walimex (made by Samyang) 500mm pro Mirror lens.Have looked well into this and results and its ok. Tripod needed–but with the high ISO usable on modern cameras 1600 ISO will be ok for hand held.Samyang in South Korea are building a reputation for high quality “manual” lenses. So high quality lenses but low in price because they are manual and no electronics. Recently a Brit. working out there was allowed to video inside the Samyang factory. Its not conveyor belt stuff, more like high class laboratory .My 1.4 85mm is Samyang manual and there is no doubt about the high class lens. I will post some pics. next week—only with the Lords good grace. If not another bit of a mounting collection of gear for Altrincham and Hale P.S . to squabble over–not too soon I hope-still got Sasha to care for.

JUST RECIEVED my new SAMYANG 500mm MIRROR LENS. Initial hand held test far exceeds my expectations. Two quick shots -a near and one at about 140 metres —cropped—-those who now my pad—the blue road direction sign is the far side of the A534 and taken from my driveway -no tripod.

Its a massive lens in girth but short in length–with camera attached has to be held by the lens as its like a barrel. Take some proper shots this week.

They look pretty sharp Ken. If your using it hand held I’d guess you had quite a fast shutter speed as I would think the lens has an image stabliser. Or does the camera have one built in?

Relying on a high shutter speed Peter—mirror lenses are renowned for not being very sharp—so this is much better than expected. Make no mistake –one thing Samyang do is produce good lenses–manual–robust–but the glass is great.

Have taken lens out for first proper test–as an idea for distance—the Memorial Sqr. clock -I stood by the disabled parking places about opposite the the ramp up to the library. The wedding going on I was level with the memorial statue–say 75 yards??

These are all hand held–would have problems taking tripod.

So in all pretty well pleased and better than expected.Snatched the wedding shot–all milling around–about 75 yards away. (Would have been our 60th this year 3rd Sept. when we all report for duty.)
