The judge had some critical things to say about my The Challenge. I took about 5 of these two chaps and I picked the one I submitted because it had the best quality.

I wonder what he would have said about this one?

You can see the board, but the shutter speed was a bit slow and the guy facing us has some motion blur, just enough to make him look unsharp. In actual fact I think it would only have impressed if they had been screaming at each other!

I think this one is better, but on a personal note I do not like sepia coloured images. Was the original a colour image?

I think this one tells a better story. Was the original one a colour image?

The other reasons for selecting the one I did was the gesture one guy was making and the fact that you could see both faces. The one I put in was in colour, I just happened to have previously processed this one in mono.

I’ve heard somewhere that if you photographing someone holding something you need to show it in the photograph. So that would make this one better, but like you say you can’t see the one of the guys expressions like you can in the one you submitted. I know it’s difficult to intrude when people are concentrating on a game like this but if you could have got a bit closer and squarer on you might have been able to get the board and both faces in. It’s a case of swings and round a bouts.
