Early experience shows this is not without problems. One I am experiencing is the START BUTTON which for no reason stops working. With the short cut icons most programmes are accessed ok. However it also displays the apps. and one of concern is PHOTOS-as this is where photo”s are imported from your cards. Also if the start button does not work various apps. can not be accessed to multi task –a main Windows Ten feature. Google shows that this is a big problem for many. With my beloved XP—as sson as the SD card was popped into the computer the window opened with options including –Import. Not so with Windows Ten-you need that App. and if the start button feature does not work non of the apps. are available.May 19, 2016 at 5:41 am #11852
Yes, I’m still dubious about W10.
Crunch time soon though, the free offer will end, or will it?May 19, 2016 at 7:32 pm #11854
I’ve been using Windows 10 for about 6 months and have had no problems. By now most of the bugs should have been ironed out.
You need to remember that previous versions of windows will run out of support eventually.May 21, 2016 at 7:02 am #11861
Will I find a driver for my 1290?
I think Tom installed it. Wonder if he has experienced any problems. I know all was well at first.May 21, 2016 at 6:27 pm #11862
Have had it on both Laptop and PC for some months now no problems whatsoever, and all drivers have loaded without any difficulty. So far everything is Tickety BooMay 21, 2016 at 8:28 pm #11863
Thanks Wallace, very reassuring. Ken has also emailed to say he is still very happy with W10 too.May 27, 2016 at 10:13 pm #11873
That pervasive Microsoft has twisted my arm and I am scheduled to download W10 tomorrow – wish me luck!May 28, 2016 at 3:12 pm #11875
Yes, I’ve not had any problems with Windows 10 on any of our computers – yes Mary’s allowed me to install 10 on her computer! Her only complaint is she hasn’t been able to link up with all her bridge contacts yet.
I’ve heard that if you wait long enough 10 will install itself whether you want it to or not! Lots of methods online to circumvent and reverse this.May 28, 2016 at 6:10 pm #11877
Well W10 is now installed and all the drivers etc were working straight away. Just done my first print. It is going to take a little while to learn the new features but all is well. Thanks for your comments.
Only mistake I seem to have made is supplying a password, which now means typing it in every time I start up the machine. Also the website approving feature of Norton doesn’t work with the new browser.May 28, 2016 at 11:24 pm #11879
I did that too John – added a password. Blasted nuisance.
I’m relying on Defender on our computers but just read in ‘Which Computing’, June issue, that came in today, that it is not as good as commercial products such as Norton or Kaspersky.
The June issue of ‘<span style=”font-size: 16px; line-height: 1.5;”>Which Computing’ has major features on Windows 10 -well worth a look.</span>May 31, 2016 at 9:40 am #11884
I’ve found a way of bypassing the need for the password – you can switch it on and off. I’ll post details later in the week.
I am unclear about what Norton is offering, you have to sign in for additional features and it could be that it is only these which do not work with Edge ( you are told to sign in to old browsers, but making IE the default doesn’t work, it reverts to Edge all the time). I have managed for years without the “additional features” – still exploring this.
I do feel I need some help in the form of a good old-fashioned book and I’ll look at the magazine.June 17, 2016 at 8:20 am #11968
Upgrading the two laptops (my own and the clubs’) has been a painful process. My laptop isn’t used much now and setting off on the up-grade resulted in it getting W7 up-to-date first, though there was no explanation of that, resulting in hours of chugging away with no result but another few changes to W7. There must have been over 100.
The club laptop was easier, since I regularly do the W7 updates. However, after installing W10 I upgraded Dicentra and now that is not working properly, insisting that the set resolution of the computer is wrong, which it isn’t. I shall have to contact the author of Dicentra to sort it.
Altogether 2 days of frustration.June 17, 2016 at 9:14 am #11969
Sequel – Dicentra
On visiting the site again I noticed that they have a note there about re-installing the old Dicentra if you have problems with the new.
I have done this three times and keep ending up with a re-installation of the new version.
I’ve written to them.June 17, 2016 at 12:40 pm #11970
Had a reply – (what service!) – Steve, the author says that W10 “fakes” the screen dimensions in order to make text bigger.
Go to SETUP>display and change the text size to 100% – it will be on 125%.
That solves it.
