My first time posting images so I hope it works! One of the many benefits of being part of a camera club is sometimes we are asked to photograph events such as The Rat Pack. It certainly is a challenge but I think the four of us enjoyed the experience and had some fun. I decided to go shutter priority, auto ISO, single point focus and used the exposure lock to set the exposure typically on the face of the principle performer.

Yes you are right its the 2014 one that is doing the rounds.  From May 2 to August 16 it will be at the Sheffield Millennium Gallery.

Just been browsing the National Portrait Gallery – Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize (the winning photographer received £12,000). Quite refreshing to see such a wide variety of portraits very much in line with the submissions in our recent portrait evening.

Ian, I’m well aware of the origins of Steve McCurry’s work my point was quite simply that without the preamble that goes with that body of work I could not tell if they are models are not.  In fact I don’t care.  What I care about is having the opportunity to see other members work and to hear the judges comments.  In short I want it to be fun.

Having a keen interest in people picture I have one or two books that contain portraiture in the title.  My current favourite is Looking East, Portraits by Steve McCurry I have studied each image and for the life of me I cannot tell if they are professional models or if they have have dressed specifically for the photographer.  What is clear is that they are a study of a person that fleetingly has a rapport with the photographer.  Lets not over complicate an enjoyable competition and lets encourage participation.

I’m in total agreement with Peter, why do we want to spoil one of the highlights of the season?  It doesn’t make any sense to me.  Surely we should be encouraging people to participate and enjoy photography, rather than thinking of ways of redefining what can and cannot be entered into our portrait competition.

My use of the word strong can be interpreted in many ways, for the avoidance of doubt it was meant to reflect the number of images entered and not the standard of the images.   It would be interesting to hear if other clubs are having a similar problem with the number of nature images entered into competitions.

I have to agree with Tom, portraiture is well served by our club.  What’s more of a concern is the nature section particularly, as it used to be so strong when I first joined the club.
