Hands up I mis quoted Martin Parr. He said ‘Make sure people aren’t smiling otherwise you take a snapshot’ . He also said ‘Always move in close when taking people shots’ and ‘make sure you find the right enviorment for that person’.

Regarding the eyes I believe that they are the windows to the Soul ( sorry in PC terms Character). When the eyes are diverted form the photographer the facial expressions are usualy enough to give the image the message that is being portraied.

As we are having our Portrait competition this week, the view that subjects in portraits should not be looking at the camera is perhaps revelent. Mr Silver has 13 of his portraits looking away from the camera. I have read recently that in all portraits the eys of the subject should never look at he camera. When the subject looks at the camera it was described as a SNAP. I have entered 6 images in our competition with 3 looking at the camera and 3 looking away. I personaly think that it depends what is the mood of the image is and the status of the subject.

Very Good Delores, I like the first one better as the textures are more evedent, with the darker image the eyes are better defined. May be you could use a levels adjustment layer and make the image a little brighter but not as much as in the Auto setting.

I would totally agree with John Prime lens are far superior to Zoom, but a word of advice always buy the best you can afford and possibly the same make as the camera you have. I regret buying a Sigma 50mm prime lens and not spebding a few £’s more and getting a Canon.

It seems to me that there is an opinion that a new category of MONO be included in the PDI competitions next year, with 4 images max being submitted. The next thing to be discussed is the make up of the categories, how many images in each category? My view would be to limit the entries to Two images in each category. Should  the number of images that count towards the league score be reduced to 4 from the present 5{ which was changed last year  from 6 to 5 with one dissenting voice,) I would be in favour of dropping the number to 4.

    Your views are awaited.

This may be a better link as the winners are shown on there own page, with the option to switch to the slide show of the finalists.

There were 8500 entries. There is certainly some thought provoking images. The point made previously is very pertinent. When is it about the photographer and when is the photograph taking center stage.
