Colour harmony is such a powerful tool in photography and art for creating an atmosphere in the medium. The key to understanding the power colours can be seen in the colour wheel which shows colours relationship to each other. Similar toned colours sit next to each other and if they’re used in a picture they can create a peaceful harmonious feeling. However, colours that are opposite in the colour wheel strongly contrast with each other and can be used to produce vibrant lively images. In the colour wheel the warm hues of red, yellow and orange are grouped together while the cooler hues of blue, green and magenta are grouped on the opposite side. These can be used to create depth in a picture as the cool colours give an impression of receding while the warm colour come forward. When a subject of one hue is placed over an opposite one it strongly stands out. As you look around your environment see if you can find any examples where colour harmony or contrast is important to the subject. Why not share your experience with fellow members and create a healthy debate?
