The theme for July is now closed

The theme for August is ‘Colour Harmony’

Colour harmony is such a powerful tool in photography and art for creating an atmosphere in the medium. The key to understanding the power colours can be seen in the colour wheel which shows colours relationship to each other. Similar toned colours sit next to each other and if they’re used in a picture they can create a peaceful harmonious feeling.   However, colours that are opposite in the colour wheel strongly contrast with each other and can be used to produce vibrant lively images. In the colour wheel the warm hues of red, yellow and orange are grouped together while the cooler hues of blue, green and magenta are grouped on the opposite side. These can be used to create depth in a picture as the cool colours give an impression of receding while the warm colour come forward. When a subject of one hue is placed over an opposite one it strongly stands out. As you look around your environment see if you can find any examples where colour harmony or contrast is important to the subject. Why not share your experience with fellow members and create a healthy debate?

The ‘Seeing in Macro’ website explains colours well here.

If you want a more technical explanation have a look at the ‘Tiger Color’ website here

To make it easier just resize your photograph as you would for a PDI competition. That is size it to fit in a 1600x1200px frame them it will neatly fit into the post. You have to type in some text first or the picture will fail to upload. Then click on the BROWSE button below to search your device for the picture. You can upload up to 4 images at a time. When you’ve finished uploading and adding your text press the SUBMIT button. See the illustration below for advice.

There’s no restriction on when the photograph was taken so search though your archives show us what you can produce. If you would like to suggest any topics for the monthly theme please let me know. Thank you to everyone who contributed to last months’ theme.

I’ll kick off this months theme with is recently taken photo of a sun flower. You can see a lot of colour harmony in nature and this photo has it with the hues being similar.

Thanks for posting these Ken. I like the colour harmony in them. I think ‘Kids Allowed is a great title and the little girl pointing stands out with her connection to the lady. I also like the placid colour palette in ‘Mr Whippy’ I wonder if they parked them like that on purpose?

Nature has a remarkable way in which it harmonises colours. Here’s an example of how beautifully it does it.
