THE  P1000  soon available with 3000mm lens  is beyond wildest dreams not many years ago. Big lenses –big  favourite of mine. Just shy   1k.   Would take the plunge if not supporting  a talented young soprano. With 18 months committed I could have had four. Just wonder whether the sensor will be up to it.  The big sensor on my DMC-FZ 1000  gives it the quality it has.

It might amuse some people but I doubt you will often get decently sharp images at the long end of the zoom. 3000mm is 60x magnification compared to 50mm and, at that mag. a telescope takes some strapping down to get a steady image. You will also get things such as convection movement in the air spoiling your shots. These things are well known in digiscoping.

It does have 5x image stabilisation to help but I expect the 3000mm is just a gimmick.

Quite true —but—–and  Johns points  are    exactly  correct. Then we think out of the box. Not all images are taken from a distance to be  spoilt by atmospherics. The fine cameras using high ISO and consequently high shutter speeds makes it all possible. I can use my camera on digital tele 1500 hand held no problem and that is with all my physical problems.  I think Nikon see nutters like me who enjoy these lenses and make it work   as a gap to fill .  Astro photographers –wild life-wow. Its always best not to use at maximum. Some pro,s are going on outside portrait stints 1,500mm   and getting results.   Think Croatia will win and if so I want to be the one to photograph their countries President  with my long lens—-in fact any lens would be stunning.LOL.

Have read the review—it is Nikon–accept  it is what it is. One video at 24mm just shows country ground and it zooms in and zooms in—to a lion and closer to see the sharpness of its eyes. Talking myself into it.Not available till September. Wait for first user reviews then  have a birthday treat. 300 pounds fuel allowance to pay a chunk off. Watch this space.
