by César Dezfuli, winner of the 2017 Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait prize

The Guardian has a gallery of the pictures by the winners and finalists for Taylor Wessing photographic portrait prize 2017. Unusual and interesting – as always! And there’s also a review by Sean O’Hagan.

Here’s the haunting portrait that came second:

Life After Isis by Abbie Trayler-Smith

And here’s Sean O’Hagan’s favourite that he mentions but doesn’t show in his review:

Must find out when the Salon de refuses is on.

The selection provides ammunition to those members who would like us to accept multi-person portraits.

I had a look at these when Ian kindly provided the link to the Guardian. I think they’re a very natural and simple set of portraits. The power of the winning photograph of the migrant, for me, is his strong eyes looking directly at the viewer. I wonder how well it would perform in a club competition as we’re not encouraged to take portraits in this way which is a shame as many good natural portraits don’t get seen.
