Members enjoyed one of our best member’s meetings last night. It’s what good camera clubs do best. Thank you to members Ray Hill, Wallace Baxter, John Royle and Stephen Coyne for sharing their skills with us. Ray gave us some useful tips on photographing airborne objects, especially regarding the exposure. Most photographers underexpose their photographs to avoid blowing out the highlights. However, as Adrian Lines explained to us in Alsager, about 30% of the information in a RAW file is held in the highlight area, so it is easier to recover highlights than shadows. Ray backed this up by telling us he now adds exposure compensation to lighten the shadows, and he can bring back the highlights. I think I’ll try that.
Stephen hosted the evening and ran the circles themed ‘competition’. It was good to see creative images from members who don’t normally enter their work. Stephen also demonstrated who to effectively darken backgrounds in Photoshop. Wallace showed us how to reveal colours in clear plastic cutlery by using back lighting and a polarising filter, and John explained who he reads his photographs to create a narrative in them.
A special thank you to our youngest member, Ellen for submitting her fine portrait of a black Labrador which brought out some of the dog’s character. Here are just a few of the images on show during the meeting.
