Stephen Coyne carried on where he finished last season by winning both our first Colour General and Mono PDI Competitions. In fact, Stephen took first, second and third spots in the Mono section, so it was a very good day at the office for him. Judge Nick Berentzen CPAGB, BPE3, enjoyed Stephen’s winning ‘colour general image’ called ‘Going Down’ which showed a hooded lady walking downstairs. Nick liked the subject position, the warm colour pallet and composition. Stephen’s second placed ‘Cowgirl Lil’ was taken at a re-enactment event in the shade to avoid the harsh sunlight. Nick told us it told a story with the poster describing the girl was wanted! Peter Robinson’s ‘Green’s Goal’ football action photograph also scored 19. A special mention should go to Sam Holden, who has entered his first CPS competition. His ‘Me and My Ball’ took a well deserved third place. Nick thought it was exciting and well timed. He liked the splashing water and the none distracting background. Paul Hill also scored two 18s with his ‘Wild Garlic Wood in Spring’ and ‘Godrevy Lighthouse at Sunset’. Nick appreciated that Paul is a master of composition, as it made both images.
Stephen’s winning Mono image, ‘Tired of War’ showed a close-up of a warrior’s face. Nick liked to impact, expression and strong eyes. Stephen’s came second with a composite called ‘Searching for the hound, Watson’ Again Nick liked the story and thought it was well put together. Stephen also too third place with another re-enactment portrait of a cowboy called ‘Get off my land’. Wallace Baxter’s terrific rugby action. ‘Painful Tackle’ caught an anguished expression of a lady being heavily tackled. Nick thought, Paul Hill’s third placed landscape of ‘Angel of the North’ was well composed with a good lead-in path and tasteful lighting.
Once again, Ian Whiston dominated the Nature section with his wonderful first placed ‘Cheetah with Siblings’, second placed ‘Cape buffalo with Oxpeckers’ and third placed ‘Hyena holding bone for cubs’. Peter Robinson’s ‘Playful Orangutan’ also scored 19, and it was good to see Ralph Browes’ persistence pay off when his delightful ‘Flower Fly on Cosmos’ score 18.
