This year’s keenly fought interclub competition against our good friends at Nantwich Camera Club was purely a PDI one due to COVID making it a Zoom presentation. It’s always good to see what other clubs are producing. The judge with the difficult task of separating so many excellent images was Nick HiltonDAPGB BPE5*. He was very positive with his remarks and gave a lot of 15s to images that have scored much higher, but the standard was very high and many of the photographs could have achieved a top score. So a score of 15 meant it was a very good photograph. After that some personal feeling must affect the scoring, but photography is about emotions.
The scores were very close all the way through and at the last hurdle Nantwich pulled some marks back by gaining 3 of the 4 images awarded 20 marks. However, it wasn’t quite enough and we won by 385 to 379. It’s always nice to win especially when it’s against a club that has something like double our membership. This victory means that we have now won three external competitions, The Robertshaw Trophy, our competition again Alsager and now our ‘battle’ with Nantwich. Credit must be given to Martin Smith, who did our selecting and to our photographers who entered our competitions allowing the images to be selected.
Our highest scoring image, with 20 marks, was Paul Hill’s ‘Turnstone feeding on Cockle’ of which Nick liked the gentle lighting and Paul’s selective focus keeping only the main parts in focus. Peter Robinson’s ‘Macaques Grooming’ and Ian Whiston’s ‘Fishing Heron’ scored 19. Peter Robinson’s ‘Flying Stunt Bike’ and Stephen Coyne’s ‘Wahiba Scene’ scored 18. See the scores here.
