Ian Whiston DPAGB, EFIAP/P EPSA. FBPE, HonLCPU dominated the high quality nature section of our second PDI competition. Highly qualified judge, Roger Evans MPAGB FBPE EFIAP praised all three of Ian’s images which were taken on safari in Africa. Roger awarded found the delightful ‘Lion Cub Siblings Bonding’ endearing and awarded it top marks. Ian’s ‘Female Cheetah Carrying Tommie’ and ‘Wet Hyena running’ both scored 19. Kath Hill’s ‘Piggy Back Ride’ photo of a Barbary macaque mother carrying its baby scored 18 as did Paul Hill’s ‘Blue Tit’. Roger found Kath’s photo endearing and liked the distraction free background, and in Paul’s photo he liked the sharp detail and position of the bird.

The Colour General section also had a strong entry and Peter Robinson’s ‘Polocrosse Action’ took the first place. Roger liked seeing the players coming toward the camera and the expressions on their faces. It was pleasing to see John Royle’s ‘Attending to Detail’ score 19. Roger thought it had a simple composition and limited colour pallet which helped the focal point dominate. Wallace Baxter’s equestrian ‘Determined Rider’ also scored 19. It ticked a lot of boxes for Roger including the horse’s position and rider’s expression. Paul Hill’s ‘Stormy Skies at St.Mary’s Lighthouse’, Keith Mulliner’s ‘Darice and Grace in gateway’ and Peter Robinson’s ‘Pisa’s Square of Miracles’ all scored 18.

In the Mono section, Stephen Coyne took the first and second spots with his ‘Hard day on the beat’ and ‘Ready to saddle up’. Roger thought both were well crafted photos of re-enactors. In both images, he liked the good eye contact and framing. Sam Holden’s panorama of Liverpool’s waterfront also scored 19. Roger told us he had taken a similar photo, and this one was very well done. It made a good black and white image with a strong tonal range in a letterbox frame. Peter Robinson’s ‘Polo Race’, Wallace Baxter’s muddy lady ‘Come and Get Some’ and Keith Mulliner’s studio portrait, ‘Ballerina Sophia’ all scored 18.
