Unfortunately, our judge for our second print competition had a medical emergency and had to concentrate on that, so was unable to judge for us. However, our former Chairman and Competition Secretary, John Royle CPAGB, Hon LCPU, is an experienced judge and kindly offered to judge the competition for us at very short notice. We are very grateful to John as it prevents us from having to reschedule the competition in our busy programme.

Congratulations to Kath Hill, who won the Nature section with her perfectly timed photograph of two ‘Common Terns with Catch’. John appreciated the none distracting water background, and the position of the birds. He liked the fine detail and the story being told. Kath also scored 18 for her ‘Irritated’, another well-timed photo of an eagle eye to eye with a wasp. Keith Mulliner’s ‘Bee on flower’, taken on a trip to Chester Zoo, scored 19. Again, John liked the detail and texture of the bee. It stood out from a diffused background and was well framed. Keith also scored 18 for another photograph taken at Chester Zoo of a black jaguar called ‘Black Jaguar Watching’.

In the Mono section, Peter Robinson’s print of an ‘Oasish Guitarist’ took the top mark. John liked the impact and twisted angle, which injected energy into the image. It was good to see new member, Sam Holden score 19 for his fine study of ‘Fountains Abbey Cloisters’. John thought this image had plenty of detail in the depth of the picture. It was a good subject for monochrome, and the arched window made a definite focal point. Sam also scored 18 for his ‘Whitby Abbey Reflections’. John told us that this image was perfectly exposed. It has a moody sky that created a strong atmosphere and is well composed. Keith Mullier’s fine portrait, ‘Eye Contact’ lived up to its title. John liked the model’s pose, expression and costume. The strong side lighting completed the picture.

The Colour General section was dominated by Peter Robinson, who took top marks for his ‘Amputee Football Action’. John chose it because it had something different and was well photographed, with the players and referee all being involved. Peter scored 19 for his ‘Panned Horse’ and ‘Chemist Cleaner’. Keith Mulliner was close behind, scoring 18 for his ‘Yarrow with alert Tabo’. John liked the fine detail in the high quality print of a horse and model. He added that the colour pallet worked well, and it was well composed. Sam Holden scored another 18 for is relaxing sea view of a ’19th Century Lighthouse’. It has a warm coloured sunset, and a lead in to the well positioned lighthouse on the horizon.

Well done to all of the winners. See all the images that scored 18 and over above and the results are on our Results page here.
