Congratulations to Alsager on winning our interclub competition against by 491 to 470 marks. The competition was split into a print and a PDI competition, with each club entering 15 images in both competitions. The first half showed off the fabulous prints, and it was a dead heat at half-time, with each club scoring 247 marks each. However, Alsager nudged ahead in the second half and won that by 244 to 233 marks. The final scores were accumulated to find the winner of the coveted trophy.

The judge was John Smith, is a member of Rochdale & District Camera Club, and is on the L&CPU executive. His role is the AV Secretary, and he edits their ‘Focal Points’ newsletter, so he’s a very experienced photographer. John travelled from Conwy to be with us on a very cold night. He agreed to the rules, that only allowed one 20 mark in each competition, but admitted that he would have liked to have awarded more.

Although we didn’t win, we did have the highest scoring print and PDI. Wallace Baxter wonderful photograph ‘Squirrel Eating Nut’ scored top marks, and John liked the overall quality, diffused background and clever use of negative space. The top scoring PDI was Ian Whiston’s fine study of a ‘Cheetah with Siblings’ which was taken on the plains of Africa. John loved the lighting and the arrangement of the group. He told us it looked perfectly natural and was very sharp. A worthy winner. John enjoyed viewing Stephen Coyne’s PDI, ‘Lake Inle Evening’. He felt the atmosphere it created with its warm sunset and relaxing drifting boat. In the print section, Wallace Baxter scored 18 for his ‘When Everything Goes Wrong’. It’s a well-timed photo of a batsman being bowled out. Kath Hill’s action photo of ‘Common Terns with Catch’ scored 18. Keith Mulliner’s portrait ‘Eye Contact’ and Peter Robinson’s ‘Amputee Football Action’ both scored 19.

Well done to all of the winners. See all the images that scored 18 and over above and the results are on our Results page here.
