Members who braved venturing out on a freezing cold night were warmed by a display of well crafted prints in our second print competition. Judge Bill Preston ARPS DPAGB BPE5, travelled from Chester to give his advice and mark over 50 images.
Congratulations to Paul Hill who scored 20, 19 and 17 for his Colour General entries. Bill loved Paul’s winning image, ‘Springtime Walk’. He told us the central figures gave it scale and balance. He liked the colour pallet and sympathetic lighting. The trees framed the photo and gave it a tunnel effect. Paul also came equal second with his ‘Sunrise at Whitby Harbour’. Again, Bill thought the silhouetted figure was small, but so important to the picture. Ray Hill’s ‘Over the hill and awaay’ also scored 19. Bill liked the matching blues and action in the picture. Three images scored 18. They were Wallace Baxter’s rugby action, ‘No chance mate’ and his portrait of ‘The General’. Keith Mulliner’s canoeist ‘Fighting the current’ also scored 18.
In the Mono section, Keith Mulliner’s well caught rugby action took top marks. It was an excellent quality monochrome print and caught the action in mid-air. Wallace came second with his canoeist photo, ‘Paddler 69’, while Peter Robinson’s portrait ‘Lord of the Manor’ also scored 19. John Royle’s pattern picture of ‘Daises Wollerton’ scored 18 along with Peter Robinson’s ‘Monkey Business’.
Wallace Baxter took the honours in the Nature section with his well caught photo of a ‘Little Egret’ tossing a fish. Kath Hill came second with her study of a ‘Female Mallard’ together with Peter Robinson’s ‘Lemur Family’ sitting on a branch. Paul Hill scored 18 for his excellent ‘Northern Gannet’ and ‘Red Deer Stag’ images.
