Our portrait photographers competed for the Howard Edwards Trophy in our annual portrait competition. This time it was judged by Mike Lawrence AFIAP DPAGB Hon L&CPU. Stephen Coyne took the honours with his excellent studio portrait ‘The Angry King’. Mike told us that Stephen had applied a texture to enhance the image, which kept the attention on the subject. He liked the eye contact and that the face was the lightest and most detailed part of the face. Keith Mulliner’s ‘Harry checking the time’ came a close second. This is another well crafted studio portrait where the subject is doing something to add interest. Mike liked the triangular composition with ‘lines’ pointing to the watch. Congratulations must go to John Royle who got equal second with his picture of a ‘Bandsman’. It has an engaging smile which just captures your attention and dominates the image. John also came equal third with two photographs. His colour popped image of a chimney sweep ‘To work’ and a street photograph photo called ‘Despair’. It captures a gentleman looking in despair sitting on a step. Peter Robinson’s ‘German Soldier’ also scored 18. See images that scored 18 and over here.
On the same night with the same judge we held our ‘Movement’ themed competition. This replaced our print portrait competition. I’ll give move details about his later, but you can see images that scored 18 and over here. Ian Whiston took the top two spots with his wonderful photograph of ‘Wildebeest Panic Mode’ which showed a herd of wildebeest fleeing from a pursing lion. Dramatic stuff. Ian took second spot with an excellent panned image of a ‘Running Cheetah Cub’. Also, with 19 was Stephen Coyne’s photograph ‘At the Fair’ which showed a static figure watching a motion blurred carousel. Keith Mulliner’s ‘After the Ball’ photograph of a ladies football match also scored 19. John Royle’s ‘Ride’ and Stephen Coyne’s ‘Take off’ both scored 18.
Well done to all the winners! See images that scored 18 and over here.
