Once again, we welcomed Jane Lines MPAGB LRPS BPE5 to judge our annual PDI competition where the overall winner is awarded the Jim Harrison Trophy. The competition is split into Colour general, Monochrome and Nature sections. The images aren’t given a mark, but are awarded 1st,2nd, 3rd, Highly Commended and Commended. Jane had an interesting way of choosing between two similar images. She compared them side by side, them kept her preference and eliminated the other.
It was Stephen Coyne’s ‘Desert Scene’ that triumphed as the winner of the Colour General section and the Jim Harrison Trophy. So, congratulations to Stephen on being awarded the Jim Harrison Trophy in our Annual PDI Competition. Jane really enjoyed the shapes, textures formed by the shadows in Stephen’s landscape. The strategically placed camel was the icing on the cake. Peter Robinson’s action photo of a ‘Polocrosse catch’ came second. Jane thought the moment had been caught well with the ball in the right place. Kath Hill was awarded third position for her equestrian ‘In her stride’. Jane appreciated simplicity of the action and none distracting background. The rider’s expression made the picture. Wallace Baxer’s motorcyclist photo of ‘Richard Kerr’ was highly commended. It was of high impact and had strong eye contact. Stephen Coyne’s portrait of ‘Girl with Pearl Earrings’ and ‘Evening Fishing’ were also Highly Commended. It was particularly good to see new member Andrew Walley’s ‘Relaxing on the Beach’ being Highly Commended. It reminded Jane of a Martin Parr photograph.
In the Mono section, Peter Robinson’s photo of veteran singer ‘Geno Washington’ was awarded first place. Although Jane thought it wasn’t technically perfect, it provoked an emotion in her which gave it the edge. Stephen Coyne was in the awards again by achieving second place for his ‘Arctic Scene’. It had plenty of texture in the glossy ice which generated a frosty atmosphere. Stephen was also awarded third place for his ever-popular environmental portrait of ‘Night on the Town’. Jane liked the character and the grittiness of the image. Keith Mulliner’s nude study, ‘The Lady Likes Pearls’ was Highly Commended as was Ray Hill’s canoeist ‘Determined’ who had a meaningful expression. Wallace Baxter’s tightly framed motorcyclist photo ‘A Wet Declan Connell Honda’ received Highly Commended.
Once again Ian Whiston won the nature section with his dramatic photo of a ‘Alpha Male Lion Warning Cub. Jane liked the well caught moment of the frenzy in a natural environment. Ray Hill’s ‘Water Rail looking for food’ came second. Jane thought the reflection helped the composition and the bird had attitude. Ian also took third place for his ‘Nest Building Village Weaver’. Jane thought it told a story and made a constructive shape to build the composition. Stephen Coyne’s ‘Long Eared Owl Landing’ was highly Commended for it’s detail and action. Ian Whiston also had his ‘Cheetah Carrying Gazelle Prey’ Highly Commended, as was Paul Hill’s ‘Atlantic Puffin calling’.

All the images that came 1st, 2nd, 3rd, Highly Commended and Commended, can be seen in the slideshow above. All the results are in our Results page here.
