A shot of the photographer’s enclosure at an airshow, bristling with telephoto lenses, showed that member Peter Bainbridge was certainly not alone in wanting to photograph aircraft. Peter’s talk was bristling too, with interesting facts, techniques and super shots. He got us so fascinated with all this that we almost over-ran. This was far from a plane […]
Crewe PS: 21 November 2015 – A tie for first plac
At the L&CPU event on Saturday 21 November Crewe PS tied for first place with Southport PS but then lost to them in a tie-break. However, Ian Whiston’s Cheetahs Looking For Prey (seen above) took the award for best image of the competition.
3rd December 2015 Meeting – Our second print compe
Before the meeting I complimented our secretary, Tom Seaton, on two of his entries and I was delighted that judge Bob Dennis agreed and gave one, “The Swimming Pool is Closed” first place in the Genera Colour section. Although two of our regular entrants were not able to compete this time we still had a […]
Alsager CC v Crewe PS 26 November 2015
Alsager fielded some excellent images, as indeed did we; and it was always likely to be a close thing. In the end Alsager took the charming trophy (a golden SLR) by just three marks. RESULTS. It was a very entertaining evening presided over the affable Daryl Giles CPAGB whose judging was light-hearted, well- balanced and well timed. The […]
What makes a good monochrome print?
This is Peter Hrebien’s photograph of Martin Simpson. It shone out in our last competition for sheer print quality. What constitutes a fine monochrome print is something which all the old hands profess to know but nobody quite likes to commit themselves to define. You won’t quite see it here because this is small digital […]
Mike Sharples ARPS MPAGB EFIAP BPE4* – 12 November
Mike showed us his successful competition pictures which featured people in costume at Blists’ Hill, the Black Country Museum, Whitby and various other sites together with landscapes from the Hebrides, the Dingle peninsular and Anglesey. There were shots of intriguing decrepitude too, a derelict cottage that Mike and his colleagues from Smethwick came across. Mike […]
Print 1 2016 – (Front Page 2/11/15)
When we hold a competition the pictures are judged by someone from outside the club, who is, of course, unaware of who has taken them, consequently progress by members in the quality and nature of their work goes unremarked. This week, however, we will be putting that to rights by taking a second look at […]
Meeting 5 November 2015 – A look at our work and t
This week we spent some time looking more closely at the work submitted for the last print competition. Members valued being able to examine the work closely and some very thoughtful comments could be heard around the room. We then moved on with Ian McNab to look at visual design and the work of some […]
Front Page: 26 October 2015
There are few photographers of the stature of Salgado and his Genesis exhibition has been touring the World recently. This time he concentrates on Nature rather than people (as he did on “Workers” and “Migrations”). All his photographs are black and white, not the default, the obvious, colour. Salgado certainly made me think again about using […]
George Franks: High Speed Flash Photography
Your electronic flash duration can be as short as 1/30,000th of a second, though more usually nearer to 1/1000th, so if the flash is providing most of the light it can stop fast action. This is the technique behind getting those marvellous shots of splashing water frozen into fascinating shapes. Using the shortest shutter speed you […]
