Stephen Coyne was the overall winner of our Jim Harrison Trophy, which is our PDI Annual Competition, with his atmospheric ‘Young Monks’ photograph. Experienced and highly qualified judge Tillman Kleinhans ARPS EFIAP/g DPAGB BPE5* Hon LCPU, took his time to enjoy reviewing it. He told us how the warm colour pallet created a delicate atmosphere which held the image together. He liked the way in which the young monk’s face was the lightest part of the image making it a focal point. Tillman added that the skin tones have been well rendered. It has human interest and Tillman considered if it should be cropped just to concentrate on the glancing monk, but decided it was left alone and the monks in the background told a story.
Paul Hill won the Mono section with his wonderful image of the ‘Wreck of the SS Nornen’ taken while it was partly submerged. Tillman liked everything about it. It had everything a good monochrome image should have. It’s well exposed, has a full range of tones, fine detail, a textured vignetted sky and a lead in line. A special mention should go to Jo Beattie who came second with her beautiful images of a young elephant interacting with its mother. Tillman liked the relationship between the two elephants and the emotion it created. He also appreciated the fine detail and the range. He told us how the young elephant’s trunk led to its mother strengthening the bond.
Ian Whiston won the Nature section with his action photo ‘Lion cub pursuing tommie lamb’. Tillman thought the moment was well caught and had a narrative. He liked the lions expressions and the look in their eyes. Well done to all of the winners!
