It was refreshing to get back to seeing and holding so many excellent prints during our first print competition of our season. The art of creating a well crafted print is still evident within our club. Our Equipment Officer, Dave Lucus did a great job in presenting them. Enthusiastic judge, Graham Currey, told us what he liked about the images and gave us plenty of advice on how the images could be improved.

In the Colour General section, Peter Robinson’s ‘Rugby Pyramid’ took top marks. Graham thought the timing was spot on with the ball sitting between, and not obscuring the players heads. Graham liked the shades of green and relaxing atmosphere created in Ralph Browes’ ‘Watch Lane Flash’ which scored 19. John Royle’s ‘Cottage Garden’ also scored 19. Graham thought it was very well done and looked like a painting. Ray Hill’s ‘By South Korean Display Team’ and Paul Hill’s ‘Yorkshire Dale Lone Tree’ scored 18.

Paul Hill won the Mono section with his carefully crafted ‘Lone Tree and Pen-y-ghent’. Graham told us how Paul had carefully chosen the angle to take this from, as the tree was perfectly positioned to show its branches without them being obscured. Wallace Baxter’s photo of a canoeist, ‘Paddler No 4’ scored 19 together with Peter Robinson’s portrait, ‘Rose Queen’ which was taken at Tutbury castle. Keith Mulliner’s studio portrait, ‘Lady with the apple’ and Ray Hill’s ‘Street Kids’ both scored 18.

In the Nature section Peter Robinson’s ‘Elephant Calf under Mum’ took the top marks. Graham thought it had the ‘arrh’ factor and liked the framing and scale of the calf. Ray Hill’s magnificent study of a gannet in flight, ‘Gannet Gliding on the wind’ scored 19 and Ralph Browes’ close-up of a ‘Pinnate Dahlia’ also scored 19. Peter Robinson’s ‘Weaver bird building nest’ and Kath Hill’s ‘Senior Barbary Macaque’ scored 18.
